DirectShow is a collection of webcam-based audiovisual portraits and digital encounters. It takes as its subject a familiar online image: the recording made in private space and directed toward unknown viewers. The title, borrowed from a legacy Microsoft media framework, places the project within the cold technical world of capture and transmission while quietly naming the project’s central condition: an image that feels immediate and personal is already structured for circulation.
By reconstructing this familiar visual register, the project identifies its operative features with greater precision. Flat lighting, fixed framing, compression, and low resolution are not incidental qualities but structural ones: they define the terms on which a private room becomes visible as media. The resulting likeness registers as personal while retaining the marks of its own mediation.
The works are published as part of an open public archive, intended to be reused, re-contextualized, altered, and incorporated into other works. Each video remains singular, but also exists as material awaiting uptake elsewhere, subject to the same dispersal and loss of control that defines the image world from which it comes.
